Set to Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for The End of Time and performed live by the musicians of Echo Chamber, Contes pour la fin du temps (Tales for the End of Time) explores the concept of artistic expression amidst isolation, inviting audiences to ponder the interconnectedness of circumstance and the act of creation.
Choreographer’s Statement
After receiving the gracious invitation from Aaron Schwebel to develop a choreographic work around Olivier Messiaen’s Quartet for the end of time, I pondered about the relevance and the importance of retelling this story. Known by so many, and so close to my own heart, Messiaen’s masterpiece was created in apocalyptic conditions while he was a prisoner of war during WWII.
Questioning my own artistic ambition, which is at best full of hesitation, I decided to plunge into this unknown, trusting my medium (dance) and forging ahead with the creations of these new stories. I started to see how these tales could be retold and asked an exquisite group of performers to join me in this exploration. Contes pour la fin du temps, is an ode to artistic creation and resilience. Using the structure of children’s tales, transforming the performers into storytellers of a better world, a world of their own, a tale for the end of time.

about The Compagnie
Led by Artistic Director Laurence Lemieux, Citadel + Compagnie is a Canadian professional dance organization that creates, produces and presents works on local, national, and international scales from its home base in a former Salvation Army Citadel in Toronto.
Having created over thirty original works, Lemieux continues to refine her choreographic vision with works ranging from intimate solos like A Perfect Day, to large scale ensemble works like Vimy 1917. From 2008-2020, James Kudelka, one of Canada’s finest choreographers, served as the company’s resident choreographer, allowing him to revisit some of his greatest works while making way for challenging new contemporary creations.
Through remount initiatives, the Compagnie is also dedicated to the preservation of important Canadian dance work, making available iconic repertoire to a new generation of dancers, including the work of the late Jean-Pierre Perreault.
Since its foundation in 2000, the Compagnie has toured extensively, travelling to Russia, Scotland’s Edinburgh Festival, and Vimy, France, as well as major U.S. tours to L.A., Louisiana, Portland, the acclaimed Jacob’s Pillow Festival in Massachusetts, and The Battery Dance Festival in NYC.
