Living Dances
Choreographed by James Kudelka
Living Dances is a collection of some of the most celebrated works by renowned choreographer James Kudelka. This triple-bill features a remount of Half an Hour of Our Time, originally commissioned by Moonhorse Dance Theatre in 2008, the moving duet, Soudain l’Hiver Dernier (1987), and the return of the critically acclaimed audience favourite The Man in Black (2010).
Half an Hour of Our Time
James Kudelka’s Half an Hour of Our Time was originally commissioned by Moonhorse Dance Theatre, and performed by Claudia Moore and the late Dan Wild. This 30-minute work was primarily influenced by Jean Cocteau and Francis Poulenc’s one-act opera, La voix humaine. Performed in silence, this duet for a woman and a man is dense with incident. Everything that has bound this couple is now unravelling before us.
Soudain l’Hiver Dernier
Soudain l’Hiver Dernier (1987) was commissioned for the inaugural season of Montréal Danse; a remarkable duet exploring variations on the theme of not failing someone. Lifting or supporting a body always implies some kind of trust, and this choreography by James Kudelka distills this bedrock faith. The work has been performed by the company at venues across Canada and abroad, winning the Bank of Scotland Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2007.
The Man in Black
The Man in Black, originally commissioned by BalletMet Columbus and given its premiere in April 2010, is one of James Kudelka’s most enduring dances. The work is a celebration of American working-class grit and of the man whose gravelly voice embodied it so movingly, Johnny Cash. The choreography, like the songs that inspire it, is an ode to the human spirit, socially congenial yet proudly independent; vulnerable yet resilient.
