Described by the Globe and Mail as “riveting”, Calm Abiding is a virtuosic solo that combines the choreographic craft of Venezuelan-born, Montrealer, José Navas, with Bhattacharya’s Bharatnatyam dance language. The work explores the simplicity of movement as more powerful than words. Bhattacharya’s Elemental celebrates the act of dance through an offering of movement and emotion. Using the most basic and primary elements of the performer’s technical training and creative influences, Elemental exposes the inner world of the dancer, invoking the imagination and channelling the music.
“At this moment in history when we are all gasping for hope, longing for touch, when our brains and bodies have been rewired for self-preservation—the function of dance in society is the most important thing in and of itself,” says Bhattacharya. “Dance inspires, dance heals, dance puts us in touch with our senses and our thoughts.”
